A Step Together: Shared Journeys of Listening and Dialogue

In October 2014, South Sudan’s Committee for National Healing, Peace and Reconciliation hosted a 4 week training on peace and reconciliation with over 70 representatives from across the country. Led by the South African Institute for Justice and Reconciliation, the training sought to prepare community leaders to begin the nationwide reconciliation consultation process,  as ambassadors of the Committee.

Salaam: South Sudan's Peace Mobilisers

These are some of South Sudan's new heroes, Peace Mobilisers working at the grassroot level in their states to heal wounds and re-weave the torn fabric of their communities.

They came from all states of South Sudan to attend "A Step Together: Shared Journeys of Listening and Dialogue in South Sudan”. The Committee’s Secretary General, Reverend Dr. Bernard Suwa says of the participants,

“They flew from the four corners of South Sudan to the humble airstrip of Yei. They represent more than half of the 60+ ethnicities in the Republic of South Sudan. This is an inclusiveness I have never seen and we are proud. It’s an astonishing commitment to peace. Even if the conflict were to end tomorrow, true healing and reconciliation cannot come in a suitcase from Addis Ababa, it starts with all of us here in South Sudan.”

The Year That Was

My Tribe is South Sudan by Edward Luka

My brother, my sister
My neighbor, my co-worker
My in-law, my countrymen
My visitor, my friend, my lover
My tribe is South Sudan

Call me Poni, call me Deng
By which I’m known to you
Call me Lam, call me Gatluak
Are all my names – true

But:
My tribe is South Sudan
My tribe is South Sudan
My tribe is South Sudan

 When I go to work
Or jog in the streets
When I pass by the markets
Or sleep under the trees
My tribe is South Sudan

I am a South Sudanese
Not known by my tribe
I am a South Sudanese
And me don’t try to bribe
Because:
My tribe is South Sudan
My tribe is South Sudan
My tribe is South Sudan

Don’t look at the marks
Or the cuts on my face
To set me apart
Or classify my race
My tribe is South Sudan

Together let us build
Our country, our identity
Let us choose peace,
Love, harmony and unity

Therefore:
I am a South Sudanese
I am a South Sudanese
I am a South Sudanese

And
#iChoosePeace,

Do you?
